How to Get to Fishing Trawler OSRS? 7 Methods, Best Gear & Outfit Guide

How to Get to Fishing Trawler OSRS 7 Methods + Best Gears

TheFishing Trawler OSRS is a members-only Fishing minigame run by NPC Murphy at Port Khazard. Players board his boat and keep it from sinking for five minutes while it trawls the sea. The primary reason most players grind this minigame is to unlock the Angler outfit, which gives a 2.5% Fishing XP bonus and saves 317,420 XP by level 99.

This guide covers every travel method to reach the trawler, exactly what to bring, how contribution points work, the solo vs mass world decision, how to get off safely, and whether the Angler outfit is worth the time. No step is skipped.

What Is Fishing Trawler OSRS and Why Players Do It

Fishing Trawler was released on28 July 2003, making it one of the oldest minigames still active in the game. It requires no quest to access and can be played at any Fishing level, though level 15 Fishing is the minimum needed to receive fish rewards at the end of each trip.

Two Ardougne Diary tasks are tied directly to this minigame. Starting any expedition completes the Easy tier task. Catching a raw manta ray at level 81 Fishing and then cooking it in Port Khazard at level 91 Cooking completes the Elite tier task, which rewards players with 50% more fish per trip.

The main draw is the Angler outfit. Each piece gives a stacking Fishing XP bonus and the full set is widely considered the fastest obtainable skilling outfit for Fishing in the game. The alternative method, Aerial Fishing, is more click-intensive and generally slower for most players.

How to Get to Fishing Trawler OSRS the Fast Way

No competitor lists every travel method in one place. Here are all seven routes ranked from fastest to slowest, so you can pick the best one for your account setup.

MethodSpeedRequirement / Notes
Minigame Teleport (Group Finder)Fastest15 Fishing required
Khazard TeleportFastLunar spellbook or tablet
Fairy Ring DJPFastRun south after landing
Ardougne CloakMediumTeleport to Monastery, run south-east
Charter ShipMediumSail directly to Port Khazard
Watchtower / Ardougne TeleportSlowLong run south after teleport
Spirit TreeSlowestTree Gnome Village, follow Elkoy, run east then south

For most accounts the Minigame Teleport via the Group Finder interface is the best option because it deposits you directly at the dock with zero walking. Players without 15 Fishing yet should use a Fairy Ring if available or the Ardougne Cloak for a short run.

What You Need Before Playing the Fishing Trawler

Requirements here are minimal, which is part of why this minigame is accessible to nearly every account type.

Quest requirementNone
Minimum level to boardAny Fishing level
Minimum level for fish rewards15 Fishing
Minimum level to equip the Angler outfit34 Fishing
Members accountYes, F2P cannot access Port Khazard

Ironmen can fully participate in this minigame and farm the Angler outfit the same way as regular accounts. There is no trading or Grand Exchange dependency here beyond buying swamp paste and rope before trips.

Best Gear and Inventory Setup for Every Trip

Weight matters on the Fishing Trawler because players move constantly between repair tasks. A graceful outfit in every gear slot is the standard setup since run energy depletion during the five-minute trip slows down contribution efficiency.

SlotBest ItemWhy

BootsGraceful bootsWeight reduction
BackGraceful capeWeight reduction (Spottier cape is alt)

ShieldImcando hammer (off-hand)Saves 1 inventory slot vs carrying a hammer

Graceful is not required to patch leaks or chop the Kraken but it keeps run energy up for the full trip. Budget players can use any weight-reducing gear they own.

Inventory ItemQuantityUse
Rope8Repair torn fishing nets
Swamp paste40Patch hull leaks
Bailing bucket1Bail rising water for 2 pts each
Flax or logs (optional)Remaining slotsFletching to pass time after hitting 50 pts

High Alchemy is banned inside the minigame so it cannot be used to pass time. Fletching is the most popular choice because it requires no extra attention and the supplies stack. Rope is consumed on use so always bank between trips when running solo.

How Fishing Trawler OSRS Actually Works Onboard

Board the large ship directly north of Murphy and wait for it to set sail. If a voyage is already underway when you arrive, wait on the ship for up to six minutes before the next one begins. Murphy announces the remaining time regularly throughout the trip.

50 contribution points is all you need. Hit it early and spend the rest of the trip Fletching.

Three main tasks earn contribution points during the voyage. Patching hull leaks with swamp paste earns 5 points per patch and also gives 5 Construction XP. Repairing the torn fishing net with rope earns 7 points per repair and gives 5 Crafting XP. Bailing rising water with a bucket earns 2 points with no skill XP attached.

TaskPoints EarnedSkill XP Gained
Patch hull leak (swamp paste)5 pts5 Construction XP
Repair fishing net (rope)7 pts5 Crafting XP
Bail water (bucket)2 ptsNone
Chop Kraken tentacle (axe)10 pts5 Woodcutting XP
Fix broken railing (hammer)10 pts5 Construction XP

The camera sways during the entire trip to simulate being at sea. This causes disorientation for some players and can be permanently disabled by clicking the camera button in the top-right corner of the screen before or during the voyage. Pets and followers, including cats, are banned inside the minigame.

Solo vs Mass World Strategy Compared Side by Side

Both methods reach the same reward pool but the experience is completely different. Mass worlds mean other players share the repair workload, making trips relaxed and consistent. Solo trips mean every leak, net tear, and Kraken tentacle is your responsibility alone.

For players purely chasing the Angler outfit the mass worlds at 315 and 370 are the correct choice. The slightly shorter trip time and zero supply pressure makes the grind far more sustainable. Solo is better only if you want the additional Fishing XP and do not mind banking between every single trip.

How to Get Off Fishing Trawler OSRS the Right Way

Players are automatically returned to the Port Khazard dock when the five-minute trip ends. There is no exit action or button to press. You are simply teleported back to the pier and Murphy distributes any fish rewards to players who met the 50-point contribution threshold.

Never die on the Fishing Trawler. The death recovery mechanic here is one of the most punishing in the game.

Dying inside the minigame creates a grave at the exact water level where you died. To recover your items you must board the trawler again and allow the boat to flood to that same water level by deliberately letting the ship fill up. This is extremely difficult to coordinate and can result in permanent item loss. Protect your gear at all times inside the minigame.

If you board mid-voyage you will wait up to six minutes on the ship before the next trip begins. This waiting time does not count as a trip and earns no contribution points. Disable camera sway as soon as you board so the motion does not disorient you during the wait.

Angler Outfit Odds and Whether It Is Worth It

The Angler outfit has four pieces including the hat, top, waders, and boots. Each piece has a 1 in 12 chance of dropping per trip regardless of how many pieces you already own. The drop is not guaranteed to be a piece you are missing.

95% of players get full set within100 trips
100 trips on mass worlds (6.5 min)~11 hours total

XP bonus (full set)2.5% extra Fishing XP

Spirit Angler upgrade cost4,800 spirit flakes total

The 2.5% bonus stacks on top of any XP boosting outfit you wear and applies permanently from the moment you equip the full set. Over a full 1-99 grind using methods like Barbarian Fishing the outfit saves you approximately six hours of training time at high levels.

The Spirit Angler upgrade is available by exchanging each Angler piece plus 1,200 spirit flakes at Gita Prymes in the Ruins of Unkah. The upgrade costs 4,800 spirit flakes total for all four pieces and changes the cosmetic appearance of the outfit without altering the XP bonus.

Players already working through the Sailing skill will find the water-based content pairs naturally with this Fishing grind. Our Marina Kebbit Monkfish guide covers all her riddles, gear requirements, and XP rewards in full.

The Heron pet drop rate scales with contribution points from 1 in 5,000 at minimum contribution to 1 in 2,500 at a full meter. Always aim to max your meter if pet hunting.

Final Words

Fishing Trawler OSRS is a low-barrier minigame that rewards patience more than skill. If you are a casual player join World 315 or 370, hit your 50 contribution points quickly, and spend the rest of each trip Fletching. If you want maximum XP per trip go solo and keep your supplies topped up between runs.

The Angler outfit is absolutely worth grinding before any serious Fishing training. The time investment to unlock it is paid back many times over by level 99. Once you have the full set consider pairing it with the Barbarian Fishing method for the fastest possible route to 99 Fishing.

FAQs

How long does one Fishing Trawler trip take in OSRS?

Each trip lasts five minutes of active gameplay. If you board mid-voyage you wait up to six minutes before the next trip starts, making the average total time around 6.5 minutes per trip on mass worlds and 7 minutes solo.

Can you do Fishing Trawler solo in OSRS?

Yes. Solo trips give more fish per run (20 to 22 vs 14 to 19) and slightly better Fishing XP per hour at around 13,000. The downside is heavier supply usage of approximately 8 rope and 40 swamp paste per trip along with a higher risk of sinking if you cannot patch leaks fast enough.

How many trips does it take to get the full Angler outfit?

Statistically 50% of players complete the full set within 44 trips and 95% within 100 trips. On mass worlds at 6.5 minutes per trip that is approximately 6 hours for the average player.

What is the best world for Fishing Trawler OSRS?

World 315 (US West) and World 370 (US East) are the two official Fishing Trawler worlds. Both are always active and full during peak hours. Pick the one with lower latency from your location and either will work perfectly fine.

Does Fishing Trawler give good XP in OSRS?

No. Fishing Trawler gives approximately 9,000 XP per hour on mass worlds and around 13,000 solo, both of which are far below meta training methods. Its sole training value is the Angler outfit. Once you have the outfit there is no XP reason to return unless completing Ardougne Diary tasks.
